It took more than 1,000 pounds of butter to create this holiday butter carving, One of the nation's largest butter sculptures -- more than 1,000 pounds of butter -- was unveiled in Manhattan. The sculpture of an ice skating cow, complete with penguins and pond, is part of an effort by America's dairy farmers to get people excited about cooking and baking with real butter during the holidays. Butter is made with fresh cream and has an ideal texture for sculpting. The life-size butter sculpture, which took more than six, 13-hour days to complete, was created by artist Sharon BuMann of Central Square, New York and carved with the help of her son George BuMann of Yellowstone National Park, Wyo. O-AT-KA Milk Products Cooperative in Batavia, New York provided the butter for the carving, which has been donated to City Harvest food bank in New York City to help feed the hungry this holiday season. The butter from the carving could make more than 24,000 servings of mashed potatoes or 84,000 holiday cookies. The butter donation is the first of its kind for City Harvest, the world's oldest food rescue organization dedicated to feeding more than 260,000 hungry New Yorkers each week.
